About Engbretson Underwater Photography

Eric Engbretson began shooting underwater photographs in 1993. Today he has several thousand images taken underwater from the lakes and rivers of the Great Lakes region. Based in Northern Wisconsin (Florence), he lives about an hour away from the largest concentration of freshwater lakes in the world. Needless to say, the thousands of lakes in the Vilas, Oneida, Iron County region offer abundant opportunities for underwater fish photography.

Using underwater cameras and lights, and scuba equipment, he usually spends about seven months of the year underwater in the lakes and rivers of the upper Midwest to find and photograph native freshwater fish in their natural habitat. What makes these images unique and different from the few other photographers who supply images like this is that he’s always working in the water with the fish, and not shooting captive aquarium fish. His subjects are wild, live, and unrestrained-free to swim away from the camera at any moment. As you can imagine, shooting fish “in the wild” is often difficult and time consuming, but the images captured are truly authentic and unique.

Eric’s pictures have appeared in a variety of magazines and publications around the world. Such publications include In-Fisherman, Field and Stream, North American Fisherman and Fishing-Headquarters beginning in 2013. His works have found a home among dozens of books, calendars, advertisements, and natural resource publications in states throughout the country.

Learn more about Eric and his work by vising his website, www.underwaterfishphotos.com. Online, you can browse through his extensive galleries and libraries of underwater images which are categorized by species and habitat types that are available for licensing.
